Songfacts®:

  • If you're sober as a drunk, you're not really sober at all, are you? That's the conceit of this song, where Kameron Marlowe is in that post-breakup state where he's not thinking clearly and making some bad decisions. When he says "I don't think about you" and "I don't really miss you at all," we know the opposite is true.
  • The song was written by the Nashville writers Marv Green, John Harding and Justin Tyler Wilson. In a Pandora Stories, Marlowe explained what drew him to the song:

"With 'Sober As A Drunk,' I moved into town and I was writing, but I didn't feel my songs were up to par yet. So this is one of the first songs I cut that someone else wrote. I love the song - the first time I heard it, it was captivating to me, the melodies and the rhythm really hit me.

I think listeners will take away the comparison aspect. I think that's the coolest part of the song:

I'm sober as a drunk, I'm as high as rock bottom

I love the double-negative thing there. The way it's written is really cool."
  • The song was released on Kameron Marlowe's self-titled debut EP in 2020. Earlier that year he secured a record deal thanks to his 2019 single "Giving You Up," which he wrote himself. Marlowe put out his debut album, We Were Cowboys, in 2022.
  • Marlowe earned his record deal soon before COVID forced a lockdown, which limited him to livestream performances and narrowed the scope of his music videos. In the "Sober As A Drunk" video you'll notice there aren't many people at the bar - that's what social distancing protocols wrought.
