Songfacts®:

  • In this gentle love song, Kandace Springs will take a big heart and the simple things over diamonds, pearls, and fancy trips. Springs wrote the song with her dad, Scat Springs, who also sings on it with her. Scat is Nashville singer who worked as a session musician and also let The Scat Springs Band, which played locally at clubs, weddings and corporate events. Scat gave Kandace her musical foundation, making sure she had lessons and encouragement. He also exposed her to the music of singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, which had a profound influence on Kandace and pushed her toward jazz.
  • Springs and her dad wrote this song years before it was released on Kandace's second album, Indigo, in 2018. He had a stroke before they could properly record the song, but with help from producers Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers they were able to use his vocals from a demo he recorded. In a Songfacts interview, Kandace said it was the most meaningful song to her of all the ones she had a hand in writing.
  • With just piano and voice, this song has minimal production, a style Prince encouraged when he had her perform at Paisley Park in 2014. Springs took a similar approach on her next album, The Women Who Raised Me, recording a collection of covers live with her band.
