Songfacts®:

  • "Last Time I Say Sorry" is a piano-driven power ballad where a penitent Kane Brown and John Legend resolve to behave better towards their wives.

I won't say I'm sorry over and over
Can't just say I'm sorry, I've gotta show you
I won't do it again, I'll prove my love is true

The singers are vowing to prove their dedication to their loved ones through actions, not words.
  • When Brown and Legend met up for a writing session in January 2020, they started talking about their relationships. "Usually the guys in the relationship will say sorry and then turn around and do it again," Brown explained to Gayle King on CBS This Morning. "Me and John were both like, that's the worst feeling in the world." That conversation served as inspiration for the song.

Brown added that the subject matter was personal to both singers. "On my end, I wrote it for my wife, just saying that 'I never wanna mess up," he said. "I just wanna love you for the rest of my life and never have to tell you 'sorry' again."
  • Brown and Legend made the black-and-white video during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, and both singers recorded their segments while quarantined in their own homes. Brown filmed his segment on iPhone and Legend shot his on Google pixel/MacBook.
  • Kane Brown & John Legend were due to debut the song at the ACM Awards on April 5, 2020. When the ACMs got pushed back because of the coronavirus pandemic, the pair premiered the track on its replacement, the ACM Presents: Our Country TV special. Because of the strict social distancing rules, the two singers performed the tune from their respective houses with the help of FaceTime.
