  • In February 2021, Kanye West's wife, Kim Kardashian, filed for divorce seven years after their wedding. "Come to Life" is a sad love song about the rapper's broken marriage to Kim. He expresses regret at having been difficult to live with when they were together, but now he misses her.

    Mad when she home
    Sad when she gone

Kanye still wishes for a reconciliation with his former spouse. Maybe those dreams will one day become reality.

Make it all come to life
Prayin' for a change in your life
Well, maybe it's gon' come tonight

It's only when Kanye submits to God's will, rather than his own emotions, that he finds peace about his circumstances.

This is not about me, God is still alive, so I'm free
Floatin' on a silver lining, floatin' on a silver lining
So when I'm free, I'm free
  • West sprinkled a sample of a Christian congregation worshipping the Lord throughout the first half of the song. He took it from "Congregation Speaks in Tongues When Led by Holy Spirit" (2011) by Rev. Dr. David P. Moten. Bishop Moten is the Pastor of The Joy of the Lord Worship Center, a Pentecostal church in Victoria, Texas.

Once the triumphant piano kicks in, they disappear. The piano is played by Zen Micheline Hung, a sixth grade student at New York City's public K-12 school.
  • Kanye West croons this song with the help of vocal editor Louis Bell. The Massachusetts native is Post Malone's go-to producer; his resumé also includes production for the likes of Camila Cabello ("Havana") and Jonas Brothers ("Sucker").
  • Kanye West produced the organ-and-piano-led song with:

Producer Jeff Bhasker, who collaborated with West on the albums 808s & Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and Watch The Throne. His other credits include Fun's "We Are Young" and Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk."

The writing and producing duo Ojivolta. They contributed to multiple tracks on Donda.

Longtime Kanye collaborator Warryn Campbell. Their partnership goes back to Yeezy's 2007 song "Homecoming."

Mike Dean, who has worked with West since his debut album, The College Dropout.
  • West built a replica of his boyhood home in Chicago's Soldier Field stadium for his third and final Donda listening party. This song's music video captures the moment when West set himself on fire beside the replica house. The flames are extinguished, and Kim Kardashian, wearing a wedding dress and veil, slowly walks towards him.

According to West, being on fire symbolizes purification and rebirth. However, the appearance of his former wife in a wedding dress doesn't mean they're getting remarried. E! was told by a source close to Kardashian that they do love each other as friends and happily do things together as a big family. Kim's participation at the event signifies how the healing power of love is helping him move on.
  • In May 2022, Bishop David Paul Moten sued West and his label, claiming "Come To Life" sampled one of his sermons without license. The Texas pastor criticized the rapper and the music industry for "willfully and egregiously sampling sound recordings of others without consent or permission."
