Songfacts®:

  • "Father" is the lead single from Kanye West's 12th album, Bully. The song operates on two parallel levels: spiritual redemption and the material markers of ascent, with the title invoking both a divine father figure and a patriarch asserting dominance.

The intro and outro sample gospel singer Johnnie Frierson's 2016 song "Heavenly Father, You've Been Good," grounding the track in sacred imagery before Ye and Travis Scott tear through verses about ego, ambition and reinvention. Ye hasn't spoken publicly about the song's meaning, but his creative collaborator Ludwig Brandt has interpreted it as a layered commentary on power, institutional control, and the line between faith and obedience.
  • Ye opens with a callback to his famous 2010 meme when an interviewer asked him if he was venturing into the fashion world when wearing a long overcoat:

    See this coat, ni--a?
    Bye-bye to my old self
Wake up to the new me

"Bye-bye to my old self" echoes the confessional reinvention arc of "Runaway," only here the tone is less apology, more coronation.
  • The chorus traces West's journey from Chicago streets - "Cottage Grove to King Drive" and the 9th Ward - to buying "two streets" outright, equating real estate ownership with personal transformation.

Travis Scott's verse mirrors Ye's structure almost exactly, swapping Chicago geography for Houston and replacing the coat moment with "You see these kicks, ni--a?" - a boast about his lucrative Nike deal. Scott also brags about having "more vision than some Oakleys," referencing his Oakley partnership.
  • Travis Scott signed to Ye's GOOD Music label early in his career. Their collaborative history dates to 2012, when Scott co-produced three tracks on West's Cruel Summer compilation. Since then, the pair have linked up on Ye's "Champions," "Praise God" and "Wash Us In The Blood," as well as Scott's own "Watch."
  • "Father" was produced by a committee of six, with Kanye West leading alongside Sheffmade, André Troutman, Jahaan Sweet, Che "Fuego 3000" Pope, and Just da 1; the latter two are known collectively as 2 Vicious.

Jahaan Sweet is a notable name in the credits, as he is one of Travis Scott's most frequent production collaborators, responsible for much of the sonic DNA on Scott's Astroworld and Utopia albums, which helps explain why "Father" sits in the same sonic family tree as Scott tracks like "Hyaena."

Che Pope is a long-standing Ye associate who has worked across multiple Kanye albums, including Yeezus and The Life of Pablo. André Troutman is West's music director.
  • The video was directed by Ye's wife Bianca Censori, her first directing credit of note. It unfolds in a minimalist church that quickly becomes anything but: nuns arrested, beauty queens paraded, card tricks combusting for no clear reason.
  • Bully is Ye's first solo album in four years, following Donda 2 (2022) and his two collaborative Vultures albums with Ty Dolla Sign in 2024. The album was inspired by his son Saint West, whom Ye called a "bully" after Saint recounted kicking another child for being "weak."
