Songfacts®:

  • "Follow God" finds Kanye West rapping about the difficulties of living a righteous life under the watchful eye of his father.

I'm just tryna find, l've been lookin' for a new way
I'm just really tryin' not to really do the fool way

Ye is determined not to repeat the mistakes of his past. He would rather stretch his hands out to God and follow Him.
  • The soulful song revisits the spiritual themes of West's 2016 track, "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1." However, while that cut finds the rapper asking for spiritual liberation, it also contains explicit lyrics about him getting intimate with a model. This Jesus is King tune is a more straightforward song about West's desire to follow God.
  • "Follow God" borrows vocals from Whole Truth's 1974 gospel song "Can You Lose By Following God."
  • The Jake Schreier-directed clip was filmed in snowy Cody, Wyoming, and co-stars Yezzy's father, Ray West. It is the first time Ray West has appeared in one of his son's visuals.

The clip ends with a note saying it was inspired by a visit that Kanye's dad made to the rapper's Wyoming ranch. "For my dad to come to this ranch and ask me how many acres is this and looks and says, 'A black man?' He knows the importance of the idea a black man can buy land in America," Kanye said.
