Songfacts®:

  • This soulful ballad finds Kanye West singing praises to God.

All my idols, let 'em go
All the demons, let 'em know
This a mission, not a show
    This is my eternal soul

The song is a profession of Yeezy's newfound Christian faith. He makes it clear that his weekly Sunday Service events
and talk of a spiritual transformation is not a publicity stunt, but something real that happened in his life.
  • "God Is" opens with a sped-up sample of Rev. James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir's 1979 track of the same name. The gospel heavyweight - who passed away in 1991 aged 59 - wrote around 400 songs and recorded at least 100 albums during a career that spanned over four decades. In 1981, he became the first gospel musician to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
  • Kanye West produced the song with:

Warryn Campbell, who is married to Erica Atkins of the gospel/R&B duo Mary Mary. Campbell and West go back a long way - the LA producer worked on Yeezy's 2007 track "Homecoming."

English singer-songwriter Labrinth, whose other production credits include Nicki Minaj's "Majesty" and the Weeknd's "Losers." As an artist, Labrinth is best known for his UK #1 and US Top 40 hit "Beneath Your Beautiful."
