Songfacts®:

  • Crush Songs is a collection of tunes penned by Karen 'O' Orzolek in the mid 2000s during a time of emotional discomfort. The album was released on September 9, 2014.

Orzolek told The Independent that she was gripped by the sort of crushes that inspired the album from an early age. "I was a chronic crusher, totally boy crazy, from when I was tiny," she laughed. "I remember being about five and checking boys out, thinking: Mmhmm, I'm going to get my mitts on him. But I didn't actually have a real boyfriend until I went to college."
  • The song's title does not appear in the lyrics. Instead it describes Orzolek's dreamy feelings about her crush.
  • Orzolek and her former lover, director Spike Jonze, have collaborated on a number of projects, including the Where The Wild Things Are soundtrack and "The Moon Song." Jonze surprised his friend with a "surprise" music video for this song, which was filmed spontaneously at the New York Metropolitan Opera House where the director was rehearsing for a Fashion Week play. The clip stars actress Elle Fanning (The Boxtrolls, Maleficent, We Bought a Zoo). Jonze explained: "During a ten-minute break as we were rehearsing and lighting at the Met, we made a very impromptu 'music video' for Karen in the spirit of her album. It just seemed like if you have the Opera House, that song, and Elle Fanning together, you shouldn't let the opportunity go by. So we made this as a surprise gift for Karen to congratulate her on her album."
  • Karen O's first big crush was Johnny Depp. "I had posters on my wall," she recalled to NME. "I've been a chronic crusher since. It'd sometimes land me in trouble."
