Songfacts®:

  • "Cairo" is a song about an infatuation with a bad boy after a one-night stand. Karol G didn't plan on falling in love with the dude, but she can't stop thinking about him.
  • Her friends warn her:

El es medio perrito (translates as "he's half a dog")

Karol can't resist her feelings for him and she's confident she can tame his bandit ways.

Lo de bandido fresco yo te lo quito (translates as "I'll take the bandit thing out of you, don't worry")

She hopes he feels the same way about her and suspects he does.

Sé que el amor no estaba en el contrato
Pero te pasa igual, yo te lo noto también-bien

(Translates as "I know that love was not in the contract. But it happens to you the same, I notice it too well")
  • Director Pedro Artola of WeOwnTheCity filmed the video in Egypt. We see Karol G traveling in a bus before arriving at the Great Pyramid of Giza and cavorting around the nearby Great Sphinx. There are also performance shots of her singing a piece of the song among Egyptian ornate rugs.

It marks the third collaboration between Karol G and Artola, following the clips for "Provenza" and "Gatúbela."
  • The visual follows in the footsteps of Shania Twain's video for "The Woman In Me (Needs the Man In You)," which was also shot in Cairo and by the pyramids. Jennifer Lopez also filmed a pyramid-themed clip for "I'm Into You" but her ancient triangular structures were at the Chicken Itza in Mexico.
  • Karol G co-penned "Cairo" with Colombian songwriter Keityn and the singer's go-to producer Ovy On The Drums. Keityn and Ovy also wrote her Nicki Minaj collaboration "Tusa."
  • It's unclear why Karol G titled the song after the Egyptian capital as "Cairo" doesn't feature in the lyrics. Maybe the Colombian singer named it after the video's location.
