Songfacts®:

  • Perry slows things down with this ballad about a female who was once a light-hearted girl until someone came along and changed her.
  • Perry penned this song with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and producer Greg Wells. Having nearly completed Teenage Dream, she felt the record was missing something and the singer told MTV News that she thinks this tune completes her record in just the right way. "I did one more song with Greg Wells, and it was called 'Pearl,' " Perry explained. "And it was kind of just like, 'All right, now I have this crown, and I have all these jewels, and I can put these little jewels into the crown, and I feel like it's a complete presentation, something I'm really proud of.'"
