Songfacts®:

  • "Sound Your Funky Horn" is an early KC & The Sunshine Band song from before their days of disco domination. It holds the essence of the band: having a good time through music and dancing. There's a party vibe throughout, with whooping and hollering as lead singer Harry Wayne Casey gives out musical instructions, the most important being "sound your funky horn."
  • Casey wrote the music to this song, but the lyrics came from the soul singer Clarence Reid. Both were working for TK Records in Miami.
  • There was an instrument theme with the band at this time; their first single was "Blow Your Whistle," which appropriately, has a prominent whistle throughout. They followed the formula here, but with the horns out in front.
  • This song made the R&B chart at #21 and went to #17 in the UK, where the band did their first tour. It took longer for the group to make the US pop charts, but when they did, they went on quite a roll. The group charted five #1 Hot 100 hits from 1975-1979.
