Songfacts®:

  • This grooving R&B jam finds Kehlani and Justin Bieber crooning about their infatuation with each other. "It's about having a healthily obsessed relationship," Kehlani said of the song. "You're telling someone, 'I love you so much it keeps me awake at night.'"
  • "Up At Night" marks the second time Kehlani has teamed up with Bieber, following their 2020 duet "Get Me" off the Canadian pop star's Changes.
  • Daoud Anthony, Trevor Romeo, Nelli Hooper and Rosemarie Windross wrote "Up At Night" with its producers, Pop Wansel and Rogét Chahayed. Daoud Anthony also plays the guitar and bass.
  • Pop Wansel and Rogét Chahayed's production starts off sounding like atypical Kehlani – ethereal and sultry with synth instrumentation. But once we get to the chorus, it shifts up to a bass-heavy dance number with disco-styled guitars.
  • Kehlani recorded the song for Blue Water Road, releasing it on March 31, 2022 as its third single. The Oakland singer collaborated with Pop Wansel on their two previous singles, "Altar" and "Little Story."

Wansel's resumé includes productions for Demi Lovato ("Sorry Not Sorry"), Ariana Grande ("Imagine") and Nicki Minaj ("Your Love," "Right By My Side").
