Songfacts®:

  • "God Whispered Your Name" is a beat-focused ode to the kind of true love that leads to a man's redemption. James Slater, Shy Carter, Micah Carter and Chris August penned the bouncy ballad.
  • I was so cold and lost
And nothing seemed to ring true

Urban knew straight away he wanted to record the song as it hit close to home. He explained: "'God Whispered Your Name' absolutely spoke to me and tells my journey in such a profound way going through a season in life of being very lost and lonely and confused and not knowing a how to get out of that, and then the chorus hits - 'God Whispered Your Name' and everything starts to open up and become clear. And that second verse when it said, 'I can feel the sunshine for the first time in a while', again, was just, it just went right to the core of me."
  • Chris August is a Contemporary Christian musician whose debut record, No Far Away, won a Dove award for Best Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. This ballad's message about a redemptive love reflects the songwriter's faith, while the organ and background "hallelujahs" from Urban's backing vocalists add to its spiritual vibe.
  • Urban debuted the song during the Country Radio Seminar's annual Universal Music Group luncheon and showcase at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on February 20, 2020.
  • The music video, directed by Jennifer Massaux, complements a song that Urban has said can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people. "I wanted to first try and capture a sense of isolation, a lonely, dark place, that transitions into light a bit more as the video progresses, which for me is how I found my own world opening up as I went along my journey," explained the singer.

Urban chose two contrasting locations to represent the transition from loneliness to life. He filmed the first part in a Nashville basement, beneath an old warehouse which the singer described as "literally the darkest, dank and smelly place."

The action later turns to a desert framed by mountains located just outside the small town of Lancaster, California. Urban admitting performing the guitar solo wasn't easy. "Playing guitar atop a boulder is definitely not a great idea," he said. "You just kinda lose yourself in what you're doing, and every minute or two you realize what you're doing, and you think, 'I better not fall off this big ass boulder!'"
