Songfacts®:

  • Keith Urban is toe-tapping into the chaos of love with "Messed Up As Me." He isn't shy about admitting this relationship can veer from ecstatic to toxic, but those late-night cravings keep pulling him back.

"It's a song about being in a relationship that maybe only has one good aspect to it," Urban told Taste Of Country. "All the rest is completely toxic and dysfunctional. But this one area is fan-freaking-tastic. So you put up with all the rest."
  • Musically, the song echoes the unresolved vibe of a dysfunctional love affair, like a relentless cycle of returning to what you know. Produced by Urban and his regular partner in crime, Dann Huff, "Messed Up As Me" hits you with the hard truth about love that's all wrong but feels oh-so-right.
  • Urban didn't write the song; it was penned by Jessie Jo Dillon, Michael Lotten, Rodney Clawson and Shane McAnally. So where does Urban see himself in these lyrics? After many many years of wedded bliss to Nicole Kidman under his belt, he's not living it these days. But those old memories? Do they ever really fade?

"Most of us have been in dysfunctional relationships before, where there's not a lot of compatibility, except for that one area where it's so good you put up with all the rest," he said. "A phone call or a night out and you're right back where you shouldn't be."
  • "Messed Up as Me" is the second song released from Urban's 12th studio album. Forget same-old Keith! Fans dug the classic Urban vibes on the first single, "Straight Line," but this song takes a wild turn!

"That was sort of intentional to show that there is, to your point, elements that are familiar. And then a lot of elements that are new, blended together," said Urban. "Getting that blend is always the challenge for me."
  • Urban debuted "Messed Up As Me" during the Country Radio Seminar (CRS) Team UMG at the Ryman luncheon, which took place on February 29, 2024 at the Ryman Auditorium.
