Songfacts®:

  • Here, Kelly Clarkson relives the breathless elation at the start of a romantic relationship. "It's the beginning of something, that intoxicating, sexy thing - you feel it, like a fantasy," she told American Songwriter.
  • Clarkson recorded "Favorite Kind Of High" for her 10th album, Chemistry, in which she delves deep into the breakdown of her seven-year marriage to Brandon Blackstock. She wanted the record to cover the entire arch of a relationship, which is why it also includes happier tracks.

"One thing I have learned, in a lot of therapy, is that it's not about just the bad," said Clarkson. "It was a whole thing. It doesn't mean everything is bad. There's nothing like that high when you first see someone, and you're like, 'Oh s--t, I wonder if they're single.'"
  • Kelly Clarkson wrote "Favorite Kind Of High" with her producer Jesse Shatkin. Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jensen is also a credited writer. Clarkson didn't actually work with the "Call Me Maybe" singer; Jepsen was part of the track with Shatkin before Clarkson wrote the melody and lyrics.
  • Weiss Eubanks and Jonny Mars directed the live video. They filmed it during Clarkson's one-night-only performance of Chemistry on May 19, 2023, at Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles.
  • Clarkson dropped a club-ready remix courtesy of David Guetta on May 24, 2023. Its accompanying lyric video stars the singer's eight-year-old daughter River, who portrays the DJ.
