  • The phrase "this ain't my first rodeo" is one of those delightfully American idioms that conjures up images of dust-covered cowboys and bronco rides, yet it serves a far more practical purpose in everyday conversation. It's a no-nonsense way of saying, "I've been around the block a few times, so don't try and pull a fast one." When you say it, you're essentially announcing that you're seasoned, that you've been through the ups and downs of this particular situation and emerged relatively unscathed. In short, you're nobody's fool.

The expression itself first rose to prominence in the 1981 film Mommie Dearest, when Joan Crawford, wielding all the grit and gravitas she could muster, declares, "This ain't my first time at the rodeo." And thus, a catchphrase was born.

Kelsea Ballerini offers a different spin on the idea with her song "First Rodeo." It's a lush, thoughtful tune that uses rodeo imagery to reflect on the challenge of falling in love again after a breakup.
  • This isn't just any breakup; Ballerini was married for five years to fellow musician Morgan Evans before announcing their divorce in late 2022. So when she talks about cautiously dipping her toes back into the waters of romance, you get the sense she's not just speaking in platitudes - she's genuinely been there, done that, and has the metaphorical bruises to prove it.
  • In "First Rodeo," Ballerini draws on the familiar themes of vulnerability and self-preservation, but with a twist of Western flair. The song exudes a kind of careful optimism, acknowledging the emotional scars of the past while leaving the door cracked open to the possibility of something better.

"There's a reality," Ballerini mused, "that an inner monologue post public breakup is, 'I feel washed up on the heart front. I feel like I don't know how to do this anymore."

But rather than close herself off, Ballerini ultimately chooses love, with all its risks and rewards. Ballerini started dating actor Chase Stokes in early 2023 after she slid into his DMs.

"At the end of the day, choosing love is bigger, and the honesty of saying please take it slow and be patient with me can actually be a beautiful and connective moment," the country star stated. "'First Rodeo' encapsulates that conversation, and more so, that decision within self to be vulnerable and open and allowing the hope of it all to seep back in."
  • Kelsea Ballerini released "First Rodeo" as the fourth single from her fifth album, Patterns. The song aligns with Ballerini's stated approach for the record, which she describes as exploring "the transition from battling against something or someone to advocating for something or someone."

It reflects her journey of self-discovery and growth following her divorce and entering a new relationship, balancing caution with hope.
  • Ballerini co-wrote the song with Nashville songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Jessie Jo Dillon, Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild, and the singer's production partner Alysa Vanderheym. It's one of several tracks they penned for Patterns during a series of writing retreats.
  • The music video for "First Rodeo" is a sun-kissed ode to love and new beginnings. Ballerini's carefree spirit shines through as she frolics on the beach and rides a carousel. It also features Chase Stokes adding a romantic element to the clip. The Outer Banks star's cameo adds a personal touch to the song, connecting it even more deeply to Ballerini's real-life journey.
