Songfacts®:

  • Kendrick Lamar's sixth studio album, GNX, dropped out of nowhere on November 22, 2024, as a surprise release through PGLang and Interscope Records. It was his first project since parting ways with Top Dawg Entertainment and Aftermath Entertainment. The album is a love letter to the West Coast - its rich hip-hop legacy, its G-funk influences, and its unvarnished street narratives.
  • The GNX title nods to the 1987 Buick Grand National Experimental, an iconic muscle car that carries no small amount of sentimental weight for Lamar. Born in 1987, he was brought home from the hospital in a Buick Regal of similar vintage, his father at the wheel. For Lamar, the car is a symbol of beginnings, resilience, and cultural roots, themes that ripple through the album.
  • GNX also answers critics who've accused Lamar of not doing enough to uplift younger LA artists. On this title track, he leans into that critique, declaring his mission to "put the West Coast back in front of s--t." Then, true to his word, he steps aside and hands the mic to Peysoh, Hitta J3, and YoungThreat - three up-and-coming rappers who each bring their own raw energy to the song.

Take Peysoh. The Latino rapper from Maywood, known for the viral hit "6 Block," was reportedly half-asleep when Lamar FaceTimed him with a simple directive: "I need you later today." A few hours later, Peysoh was in the studio, tackling a beat so technically challenging it would make most rappers break into a nervous sweat. His opening verse is a statement of arrival, matched by his back-and-forth with Kendrick in the chorus. "It's so dope that he embraced the culture and did right by us," Peysoh told the LA Times.

Then there's Hitta J3, a longtime friend of Lamar's and member of the hip-hop collective Meet the Whoops. Known for performing their namesake anthem alongside Jay Worthy at Lamar's The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert in Inglewood in June 2024, Hitta J3 brings streetwise authenticity to his verse.

And rounding out the trio is YoungThreat, a Los Angeles rapper who first gained traction on SoundCloud in 2019 with "Who Gone Slide." Together, the three deliver a posse cut oozing unapologetic pride, resilience, and a hard-earned sense of belonging.
  • Throughout the track, Lamar's recurring hook - "Tell 'em [name] did it" - hammers home the artists he's choosing to amplify. Lamar acknowledges his own place as a giant in the game while also acting as a platform for the next wave.
  • The lyrics of "GNX" don't mention the car that inspired its title. But that's pure Kendrick. The Buick GNX, with its rarity and cultural cachet, parallels Lamar's own status in hip-hop: a one-of-a-kind artist who merges nostalgia with cutting-edge innovation. It's a metaphor as layered as his verses, designed to reward those willing to dig deeper.
  • Production-wise, the track was a last-minute addition. Producer Rascal, who previously contributed to "Savior" on Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, said Lamar requested the beat just two days before the album's release. The ask? "Some ignorant West s--t."
