Songfacts®:

  • A complimentary piece to Kendrick Lamar's feel-good track "I," this melancholic number finds the Compton rapper exploring the darkness of his heart and how fame has made him a hollow monster. He told Rolling Stone. "That was one of the hardest songs I had to write. There's some very dark moments in there. All my insecurities and selfishness and letdowns. That s--t is depressing as a motherf–ker. But it helps, though. It helps."
  • Lamar pulled his lyrics from previous experiences covering his whole life. He told MTV News: "I think everything is drawn out of that, even situations from good kid, m.A.A.d. City. Nothing was as vulnerable as that record. So it's even pulling from those experiences of coming up in Compton."
