• "I'm Alive" is Kenny Chesney's mellow but uplifting duet with Dave Matthews, a man not known for country music. The connection was Willie Nelson, who released the original version of the song on his 2008 album Moment Of Forever, which Chesney produced. On that album, Nelson covered the 2003 Dave Matthews song "Gravedigger," which gave Chesney the inkling to ask Matthews to duet with him on a new version of "I'm Alive."
• Chesney released the song on his 2008 album Lucky Old Sun. That year, it was released as a single and peaked at #118.
  
  In 2009 the song was included it on Chesney's 2009 Greatest Hits II collection and re-released as a single with more promotion. This time it went to #32.
• The song was inspired by Chesney's breakup with the actress Renee Zellweger; they got married in 2005 but split up just four months later. Chesney told AOL that it's one of his most personal songs, "just because of where I was in my life when I wrote it."
  
  "I woke up one day and realized, even though I'm going through all this stuff and don't feel good about it, the outer shell of my life is really great," he explained. "I'm alive; I get to make music; I've got a lot of great friends. That's the message of the song."
• Chesney co-wrote the song with Dean Dillon and Mark Tamburino. Chesney looked back on writing "I'm Alive" in his 2025 memoir Heart Life Music:
  
  "Dean Dillon, Mark Tamburino, and I wrote this one down in the islands when I was wore out – and realized, looking at at the clouds over the ocean, that as exhausted as I was, I still had so much to be grateful for."
• Dave Matthews has plenty of experience performing as a duo: He's often worked with Tim Reynolds, and in 2007 their live version of "Eh Hee" went to #107. This duet with Chesney, though, got him on the Country chart, where it peaked at #6. Most of Matthews work is with his Dave Matthews band, which has a very loyal fanbase that propelled seven of their albums to #1.
