Songfacts®:

  • Avalon is a mythical island from the legend of King Arthur where his famous Excalibur sword was forged. Kenny Loggins didn't write this ballad about the medieval hero, but was inspired by Arthur's utopian respite as a place of healing. "It's about a relationship that has been together a while and started to drift apart," he explained in a 1988 interview. "The singer refers to the way love used to be as Avalon. They've got one last try to regain that feeling of Avalon."

But what becomes of the couple? Loggins replied: "I have no idea. It's as if it was a scene of a movie. You only get to see the one scene; you don't get to see the resolution."
  • Loggins may have been inspired by his own failed attempt to recapture Avalon with his first wife, Eva Ein. By the time the album was released in 1988, they were on the brink of separation; they divorced two years later.
  • Loggins wrote this with Peter Wolf, his songwriting partner on the Top Gun track "Playing With the Boys," and Nathan East, who played bass on "Footloose."
  • This is the title track from Loggins' sixth solo album, which is known for its soundtrack singles "Nobody's Fool" (Caddyshack II) and "Meet Me Half Way" (Over The Top).
