Songfacts®:

  • "I Believe In Love" was Kenny Loggins' first solo hit after leaving Loggins & Messina. It was introduced by Barbra Streisand in A Star is Born, a 1976 film that Loggins is said to have turned down a role in. It was throughout writing the song with Streisand regulars Alan and Marilyn Bergman that Loggins was introduced to Streisand's then-boyfriend Jon Peters, who produced the 1980 movie Caddyshack, which contained Loggins' first movie hit: "I'm Alright." >>>

  • Streisand's version was released as the B-side to the #1 single "Evergreen," the theme from A Star Is Born.
  • Melissa Manchester sang this as part of a tribute to Alan and Marilyn Bergman in 1980. Two years earlier, Loggins had a Top 10 hit with "Whenever I Call You "Friend",'" a song he wrote with Manchester.
  • Rosemary Clooney recorded a version featuring Woody Herman and his orchestra for her 1983 album My Buddy. The following year, Johnny Mathis released a rendition on his Live album.
  • The album marked a stylistic shift from the folk-influenced rock of Loggins & Messina to a more R&B and jazz-inflected soft-rock approach.
