Songfacts®:

  • This is a rather powerful tune by Kenny Loggins from the same album "This Is It" came from. Loggins claimed it was the first song he recorded for a movie - he wrote it for the Richard Gere film American Gigolo, but thankfully it got rejected. His first hit movie theme was "I'm Alright" (theme from Caddyshack). >>>

  • Loggins' first two solo releases, Celebrate Me Home and Nightwatch, paired him with producer Bob James, a jazz keyboardist who helped the singer transition from the folk-rock sound of Loggins & Messina to smooth jazz-influenced soft rock. For his third album, Keep The Fire, Loggins enlisted veteran rock producer Tom Dowd - who famously engineered the Ray Charles classic "What'd I Say" and Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife," and produced albums for Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, and The Allman Brothers - to liven up his style.

"Well, wait a minute, I also want to rock 'n' roll,'" Loggins told Ultimate Classic Rock of his mindset at the time. "My dream was always to be in the Who. I never wrote that stuff, so I never could do it. That was like my hidden alter ego. I didn't have anything to take me into an encore and I really wanted an audience to get up and dance, but I didn't have anything they could dance to."
  • Keep The Fire was Loggins' third consecutive Platinum-certified album, signifying a million sales in the US. He didn't release another million-seller until 1994 with Return To Pooh Corner.
