Songfacts®:

  • In songs and movies, Godzilla is typically found stomping out Tokyo or causing some other type of destruction. But here, Kesha shows a different side of the monster, explaining how he makes a great boyfriend: He's fun at the mall and a great listener.

It's one of the few Kesha songs she had no hand in writing; it was written by her mom, Pebe Sebert, along with Nathan Chapman and Claire Wilkinson. In a 2021 Songfacts interview with Pebe, she explained: "The point of that song to me is just judgment. Because he looks like Godzilla everybody assumes he's going to be bad. It could be a metaphor for somebody being gay or being another race. I recently spent time with some people who were mad that their son was dating someone who was Asian. So 'Godzilla' could represent anything that scares people.
  • Pebe Sebert wrote this song long before Kesha recorded it. It wasn't written specifically for Kesha, but she was thrilled to have it for her Rainbow album, which includes another song Pebe wrote many years earlier: "Old Flames (Can't Hold a Candle to You)," a #1 Country hit for Dolly Parton in 1980.
  • Ricky Reed and Drew Pearson produced the track. Both also added piano.
