Songfacts®:

  • This irreverent pop track finds Kesha speaking her mind and creating her own unique dance through life.

Hey, I don't do that dance
    Hey, I don't do that
Hey, I don't do that dance
I only do my own dance

Kesha makes it clear that rather than adhering to public pressure, she's only going to dance for herself.
  • Kesha wrote the poppy thigh-slapper with John Hill, ((Shakira's "She Wolf, Karmin's "Brokenhearted"), Justin Trantner (Justin Bieber's "Sorry," Selena Gomez' "Good For You"), and Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons. The track was produced by Kesha and John Hill.
  • Kesha's 2017 album Rainbow marked a noticeable departure from the electropop sound of her first two studio albums. Initially, the singer wasn't sure how to follow Rainbow, and early songwriting attempts trended toward country. Then her brother Lagan called and asked why she wasn't making pop music anymore.

"I had to do some thinking about it," she told The Atlantic. "I felt I didn't deserve to just be unapologetically joyous and happy, because as the whole world knows, I've been through some... traumatic things in my life."

Kesha was still unconvinced when she went into the studio with Dan Reynolds, Justin Tranter, and John Hill - three writers who are known for their commercial material. Together they wrote "My Own Dance"; it was the song that got Kesha into loving pop music again.
