Songfacts®:

  • This anthemic song is the lead single from Cannibal, an EP by Kesha. The disc was released both on its own and bundled with the singer's Animal record in a deluxe reissue.
  • Kesha told Entertainment Weekly that she penned this pride anthem in the wake of news of a series of suicides by gay youngsters caused by bullying. "I wanted to inspire people," she said, "to be themselves. It's a celebration of any sort of quirks or eccentricities."
  • Kesha explained that the EP is a follow up companion to her previous record, Animal. "This year has been carnivorous and life-changing. I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime,[...] My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgement and be themselves unapologetically. It's the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don't like it — bite me."
  • This song debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. In doing so, Kesha became the first female artist to have a single debut at the top position since Britney Spears did a year previously with "3." The previous artist to do so was Eminem, who launched with "Not Afraid" in May 2010.
  • Kesha explained to Spin magazine why she wrote this song: "Young people need a role model to tell them they're beautiful exactly the way they are and that they don't have to be apologetic about themselves," she said. "So I wanted to write a super-positive anthem."
  • The song's music video was directed by Hype Williams in downtown Los Angeles, and it shows Kesha partying the night away with her friends. The clip also features some product-placement where we see two female party DJs view Plenty of Fish. The dating site also made an appearance in Gaga's "Bad Romance" video.
