Songfacts®:

  • This duet between Tate Mcrae and Khalid finds both singers crooning about a romance that is falling apart. The song plays on the title as the artists declare they miss each other when they're away from home "working." However, when they do get together, they realize their relationship isn't working out.
  • Khalid wrote the song with:

Australian songwriter Sarah Aarons, who co-penned four songs on Khalid's Free Spirit EP, including the title track and his John Mayer collaboration, "Outta My Head."

The track's producer, Joel Little. The New Zealander rose to renown as Lorde's collaborator on her debut album, Pure Heroine. He later worked with Taylor Swift on four songs from her Lover record, including "Me!" and three tracks from Khalid's American Teen set, including "Young, Dumb and Broke."
  • For Tate McRae, "Working" was her third collaboration of 2021, following "You" with Regard and Troye Sivan, and "U Love U" with blackbear.
