Songfacts®:

  • This was the first track to be made available from Kid Cudi's third studio album, Indicud. Cudi tweeted when it was released: "'Just What I Am' was designed for replay button rape. Enjoy and live it!"
  • The song features Cudi's friend and frequent collaborator King Chip. The Cleveland native changed his name from Chip Tha Ripper as a result of signing to the Creative Artists Agency in the summer of 2012. This was King Chip's first credit under his new stage name.
  • Cudi sings on the hook, "I need to smoke, I need to smoke," referencing his need for weed. Cudi gave up all drugs as a result of a cocaine problem, but it appears he has since returned to smoking grass.
  • The video was shot in a day and marked Cudi's directorial debut. He recalled its filming to Billboard magazine: "I work on the treatment," he said. And my treatments are really simple. I really don't have to do one, because I'm the one that's directing. I know what I want. The shoot is all about getting my people together and executing it. On my set, it's very f---in' 'laxed. It's not stressful at all. We're getting the shots and we're getting out of there."
  • The album title is the marijuana type Indica mixed with the name Cudi.
