Songfacts®:

  • Two versions of this song were recorded by Kid Rock: "Say Goodbye" for the "clean" version of First Kiss, and the profanity-laced "FOAD" (aka 'F--- Off and Die") for the "explicit" edition of the album.
  • "FOAD" was the original version and it was the singer's fellow Detroit rocker Bob Seger who cleaned it up. "When Seger heard it, he's like, 'What'd you do?! You ruined it!'" Rock recalled to The Oakland Press. "I'm like, 'What, by saying the F-word?' And he goes 'No, no, it's just such a pretty song.'"

"So he took it home and called me the next day and had me writing down words over the phone," he continued. "Then he's like, 'I'm just gonna come over. I want you to sing it like I hear it.' And he came over and sat with me and we got it all laid down in 30 minutes."
  • This isn't the first time Bob Seger has a songwriting credit on one of Kid Rock's albums. In 2003 Rock recorded the "Shakedown" singer's unreleased "Hard Night For Sarah" for his self-titled long player.
