Songfacts®:

  • Written in 2009 while Kings of Leon were touring, the band unveiled this acoustic ballad on March 31, 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic. With lyrics about being unable to meet up with loved ones, it fit in perfectly with people self-isolating during the lockdown.
  • Kings Of Leon released a stripped-back acoustic version on Instagram as their first new music since their 2016 Walls album. They dropped it on March 31, 2020 under the name "Going Nowhere" but named it "Supermarket" when they included it on the When You See Yourself album.
  • Regular Kings of Leon collaborator Casey McGrath directed the sparse, black-and-white video. Shot live in Nashville, it shows frontman Caleb Followill sitting on the side of a couch in an empty room. He croons the lyrics with his back to the camera while strumming his guitar.
  • After Caleb Followill debuted "Going Nowhere" the band recorded a studio version, re-named "Supermarket," for their When You See Yourself album. "The version I played for so many years wasn't necessarily something the guys wanted on the album," Caleb explained to NME. "But I've found myself returning to it a lot. It was initially something to tide our fans over, but then everything stopped, and that's when we realised it could actually be important – and it made sense, when you look at what's going on right now."
  • The mellow, introspective track finds a lonely Caleb Followill missing his then girlfriend, now-wife, Victoria's Secret model Lily Aldridge, while on tour.

And it's a long hard road until I can get to you
And I'll be holding on, hoping the sun comes shining through

Once they're reunited, he sees a bright future for the two of them.
