Songfacts®:

  • This song became an anthem for the Yellow Vests Movement - "Gilet Jaune" is French for "yellow vest." The movement began in November 2018 as a spontaneous uprising against what was perceived as a massive and unjust increase in fuel taxes, something that caused great hardship, especially for working-class commuters. The resulting protests were at times incredibly violent.

Toulouse delivery driver Kopp Johnson's simple, repetitive chant based on African rhythms expresses support for the Yellow Vests and calls for the resignation of French President Emmanuel Macron.
