Songfacts®:

  • This song was written on the birthday of Brian "Head" Welch's mother. The Korn guitarist said in a track by track interview: "The working title for that song was 'Mary Ellen Thrash' because her name is Mary Allen and then it turned into 'Black Is the Soul,' which is rather creepy after it being named after my mom."
  • The creepy video shows Korn performing in a dark, water-filled room as a faceless girl slowly walks toward them. According to singer Jonathan Davis, "Black Is The Soul" is a song "about being pulled away from the right path." He added that the eerie visual "reflects that experience of trying to navigate those conflicting emotions."
