Songfacts®:

  • Born and raised in the small Louisiana town of Abbeville, Koryn Hawthorne grew up in church. The young singer came to prominence when she was a finalist on the eighth season of NBC's The Voice, reaching the Hot 100 with her version of Foy Vance's "Make It Rain." She also topped Hot Gospel Songs with "How Great Thou Art," which she performed on the show in April 2015. Hawthorne got signed to RCA Inspiration, a division of Sony Music dedicated to gospel music recording. "Speak To Me" is a single from her second album, I Am.
  • Written by Johntá Austin, Troy Taylor and Jeremy Hicks, Koryn Hawthorne was drawn to "Speak To Me" as it reflects her love for God and passion for prayer.
  • The song samples gospel icon Donnie McClurkin's 1996 single "Speak to My Heart." Hawthorne explained to Apple Music: "The idea was to put our own spin on it. I think being 22, I get a lot of questions from different young people asking me, 'Hey, how do I pray?' I think that this was definitely a moment to show my personal relationship with God, which is super laid-back and 'come as you are.'"
  • This became Koryn Hawthorne's third #1 on the Hot Gospel Songs chart, following "How Great Thou Art" and "Won't He Do It."
