Songfacts®:

  • Kristian Bush is the less visible member of the Sugarland duo. "Love Or Money" is a song he wrote with Matt Thiessen of Relient K, along with Jeff Cohen, the record executive who put the collaboration together.

It was Cohen who signed the pre-Sugarland Bush to Atlantic Records. His writing credits include "Crazy For This Girl" by Evan and Jaron and "Holy Water" for Big and Rich. Bush had never heard of Thiessen, but was willing to work with him based on Cohen's recommendation and a look at Matt's Wikipedia page.

"We met sight unseen," Bush told us about meeting Thiessen. "I'm from Atlanta and he's from Nashville, so I said, 'How long have you lived in Nashville?' He goes, 'Oh, I just came here two or three months ago.' And I said, 'Well, why did you come? Did you come for love or money?' And I realized, 'Holy, crap, we've got to write that song.' We all kind of laughed and he looked at me like I was some sort of weird savant. Then we wrote that song very quickly. It didn't take us more than 45 minutes." (Here's our full Kristian Bush interview.)
