  • When KSI posted a cryptic Instagram story claiming he was "single and alone," his fans were concerned. He'd been dating his girlfriend for over three years and it seemed he'd found "the one." On November 3, 2021, KSI clarified on YouTube, "Me and my girlfriend are not together anymore. It just didn't work out. It's no one's fault, it just didn't work out."

KSI assured his fans he was doing well, but in reality the turbulent breakup had taken a toll on his mental health. He recorded this pop-rock soul-searching number about his struggles to move on.

"'Voices' is a song I worked on during my weird phase mentally," KSI said. "This is a big song for me because it marked a big chapter in my life. After my breakup, I thought I was fine, but I had these voices in my head telling me I wasn't as happy as I thought I was."
  • American alternative rock singer Oliver Tree joins KSI on the song. He, too, croons about the pain we experience after a breakup. "Lying to ourselves as we try to replace the void with a fling or waking up in your cold empty bed alone," Tree said. "That person can haunt our head for months, even years after. Wondering if we will ever escape the memories of the person, we once loved who's now a stranger."
  • KSI refused to reveal his girlfriend's name when they were dating and has continued to keep her identity secret. Some of his fans speculated he'd been going out with fellow artist Anne Marie, who has featured in a few of his songs, such as "Don't Play" and "Little Bit of Fun." However, it's more likely the girl in question was someone not famous who KSI wanted to protect from media scrutiny.
  • KSI and Oliver Tree co-wrote "Voices" with Conor Blake Manning, Sara Boe, Mojam and Digital Farm Animals. The latter also produced the track. Mojam and Digital Farm Animals' previous KSI collaborations include the singles "Really Love" and "Don't Play."
  • KSI recorded "Voices" at Abbey Road Studios and released it as a single from Caught In Two Minds on January 27, 2023.
