KT Tunstall was born Katie Victoria Tunstall in Edinburgh in 1975 and was just days old when she was put up for adoption. Her biological mother, Carol-Ann Orr, was a dancer of half-Chinese heritage who had become pregnant after a relationship with an Irish barman. KT was later adopted by David and Rosemary Tunstall and raised in St. Andrews, Scotland, with their two sons, Dan (who is profoundly deaf) and Joe.
The Tunstall household was unusually quiet, with no television or music because electrical interference could affect Dan's hearing aid. The silence sharpened KT's appetite for music, leading her to teach herself piano at age 7, and later guitar and flute. At 15, she joined a local theater group and became immersed in all the music she could find.
She studied at Royal Holloway, University of London, but spent years after graduating living in cheap flats, surviving on government support, and even stealing vegetables from a nearby field to get by. KT described these early years as a "proper rock 'n' roll cliché," though she also admitted in interviews, "I wasn't happy."
"Suddenly I See" is KT Tunstall's biggest hit. The song became an empowerment anthem and was used in the movie The Devil Wears Prada.
Tunstall later found and reunited with her biological mother, Carol-Ann, who by then was married to David Orr, a former doorman who once stood as a BNP (British National Party) candidate in the 2010 general election, an uncomfortable detail KT has not publicly commented on.
Her adoptive father, David Tunstall, a respected physics lecturer at St. Andrews University, died in August 2012. Just weeks later, KT and her husband, Luke Bullen, a drummer she had met at age 27, ended their marriage. She called that season of her life a personal and professional turning point.
Tunstall wrote the music for a revised version of Clueless, a musical adapted from the 1995 film. It premiered in the UK at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley in February 2024. She spent years developing the show, telling ITV's Lorraine Kelly it was a "passion project" that finally paid off with a West End run and an extension.

Tunstall used 24 distinct drum kit sounds on a single electronic setup to achieve the genre-hopping effect, mimicking the musical chaos of the '90s charts when Nirvana and Right Said Fred could be Top 10 neighbors.
During lockdown in California, Tunstall adopted a timid rescue dog named Mini. One day in the park, Mini ran off to play with another dog, something she'd never done. When the singer looked up, she locked eyes with the other dog's owner, a 6'3" jiu-jitsu instructor. "My dog was like, 'That's my dad,'" Tunstall joked. They've been together ever since, and she credits Mini with the matchmaking.
KT Tunstall performed her debut album Eye to the Telescope in full at London's Royal Albert Hall on June 23, 2025. The concert was a long-held dream for her and celebrated both the 20th anniversary of the album and her milestone 50th birthday.
