Songfacts®:

  • This is the title track of Kurt Vile's Back to Moon Beach EP, released on November 17, 2023 through Verve Forecast Records. The titular "Beach on the Moon" is the Philly slacker king's creative space where he finds inspiration.
  • This celestial soundscape isn't a literal place, according to Vile. In an interview with Uncut magazine, he described it as "a little bit of both" reality and imagination. Referencing Neil Young's ability to access an "outer space" through music, Vile explained you "get lost in your guitar or a hypnotic groove. That's how I play music – I'm here, and then I've gone to another planet and come back. So, Moon Beach is just a place where you can relax and your spaced out making music."
  • Mostly recorded in 2019 at the Panoramic House studio in Marin County, California, Back to Moon Beach is a mix of new compositions, reimagined favorites, and even a few choice covers. Notably, the EP marks the final contributions from Vile's longtime collaborator Rob Laakso, who passed away in early 2023.
  • Clocking in at over 50 minutes, Back To Moon Beach isn't your typical EP. It pushes the format's boundaries, a move Verve Records aptly described as an "EP by no one's definition but Kurt Vile's."
