Kylie Minogue

Kylie Minogue Artistfacts

  • May 28, 1968
  • Kylie Minogue was born in Melbourne Australia, of Welsh ancestry. A highly successful TV actress during her teens, she was signed to a recording contract after being spotted performing "The Loco-Motion" in a pub with the cast of her TV show after an awards presentation. Her cover of the song topped the Australian charts for seven weeks, resulting in a UK record deal. It went on to reach #2 in UK and #3 in the US.
  • In May, 2005, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but made a full recovery. Kylie's breast cancer diagnosis marked a turning point, not just in her personal life but in how she was perceived by the public. Post-recovery, she embraced her new role as a symbol of resilience and shared that the experience shifted her priorities, influencing her music and philanthropic interests.
  • In 1988, she became the youngest female to top the UK albums chart when her debut, Kylie, went to #1. That record stood until 2003, when Avril Lavigne, at 18, went to the top with Let Go. The title changed hands a few more times as artists got younger - 17-year-old Billie Eilish claimed it in 2019 with When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?
  • Minogue has broad international support, but is especially strong in her native Australia and in the UK, where she is the only performer to place her first 13 singles in the UK top 10. In America, she's mostly known for her 1988 cover of "The Loco-Motion" and for her 2001 hit "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," but her disco-fied sound caught on there in the '10s when she landed a number of Dance hits.
  • She is one of only two women to top the UK singles chart during the '80s, '90s and '00s. The other is Madonna.

Minogue is the only woman with #1 UK albums in the '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s and '20s.
  • Kylie has always emulated Madonna. Madonna repaid the compliment by wearing a Kylie Minogue T-shirt when she performed "Music" during the MTV Europe awards show in 2001.
  • She played the Green Fairy in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge, appearing in a vision after Ewan McGregor drinks absinthe. She also recorded a cover version of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" for the film but it was cut by director Baz Luhrmann. >>

  • She was nominated for her first Grammy - Dance for "Slow" - in 2004. She was beaten by Britney Spears, who won for "Toxic," a song she picked up after Ms. Minogue rejected it for her album. >>

  • Her "Kylie Minogue at Home" collection of linens, candles, diffusers, towels and other homeware was launched in 2008.
  • In October 1999 the Australian singer released a collectible art book featuring contributions from many of the world's most respected artists, on the theme of "Kylie." Demand for the book was massive with a second printing within the first month of release.
  • Asked during a Reddit AMA who her role model was when growing up, Kylie replied: "My first pop epiphany was with Grease - The Musical. I would have been about eight years old and I absolutely wanted to be Olivia Newton-John. I was crazy about ABBA and my Dad's record collection, which most importantly had The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Donna Summer's 'Bad Girls.'

As a young teenager I was crazy about Prince. The Jacksons and a lot of the New Romantic pop coming from Europe."
  • Kylie Minogue was listed in Time's 2024 Time 100 list of the world's most influential people under the "Icons" category. Dua Lipa, 21 Savage, and Burna Boy were among the other music acts included.

"Thank you for this incredible honor, being amongst such stellar company," Minogue wrote on Instagram. "This is mind-blowing to me and is making my heart FULLY Padam!!"
  • Speaking with Audacy in a 2024 interview, Kylie Minogue revealed that if she were to assemble a "We Are The World"-style charity song, she would create an all-girl supergroup. Her dream lineup includes Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chappell Roan.
  • Kylie Minogue still owns the mono radio cassette player from her teenage years, complete with her 14-year-old self's graffiti scribbled all over it. This personal keepsake is a reminder of her early obsession with pop music, long before she could have imagined becoming a global pop star.
  • While she keeps a low profile with her charitable efforts, Kylie is deeply involved in causes close to her heart, especially cancer research and children's hospitals. She frequently visits hospitals unannounced and has quietly donated to various health-focused charities, preferring her efforts remain private.
  • Kylie Minogue launched her debut fragrance, "Darling," in 2006. The fragrance became very popular, especially in Europe and Australia, and its success led to several more scents in her fragrance line.
