Songfacts®:

  • Lady A's first single from their third studio album was written by the three band members and released on May 2, 2011 to radio stations. The trio debuted the slow, tender track live on May 5, 2011 on American Idol.
  • The song is about a goodnight kiss at the start of a new relationship. Here's what the three Lady A members had to say about the tune, starting with Hillary Scott, who was dating drummer Chris Tyrell when they wrote this number. She said: "We love writing songs from personal experience, and this is definitely one of those songs. There is so much excitement at the beginning of a new relationship ... all the butterflies and that optimistic feeling that this person could be 'the one.'"

Dave Haywood: "One of the best things about writing for us is that we have the option to speak from both the man and woman's perspective because Charles and Hill can share lead vocals."

Charles Kelley: "The day we wrote this song was one of those days that renewed my faith in the bond the three of us have as songwriters. It came so easily, and it reminded me of the early days when we first started out, and we'd spend hours in my brother Josh's house writing songs. Everyone keeps asking if we feel pressure after the success of 'Need You Now,' and we are trying to not even think about the new album or these songs in those terms. We are just writing about what we are going through in our lives, and we hope that country music fans continue to connect with them."
  • The song landed at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its first week of release - the highest debut by a country group in the history of the chart.

  • Bethany Ellis from Blacksburg, VaI love that song it’s my moms favorite song on the radio but it was the best song I’ve ever written so far but lady antebellum did really well with music and different songs with need you now, and heart break albums. They’re so glad they worked with me.
  • Megan from Stevenson, AlWow! This is such a good song! Probably one of their best ones! :)
  • Ulquiorra from Singapore, SingaporeI feel this song is about abstinence. It's about two new lovers having the desire to make love, but feel that it would potentially ruin their relationship, that they could be each other's one they've 'been waiting for my whole life' and their ensuing struggle choosing whether to make love now. They finally contend that they would be satisfied with "Just a kiss goodnight".
