Songfacts®:

  • This vulnerable piano ballad finds Hillary Scott singing of a person she loves but is emotionally unavailable. She is "tired of the shore" and wants to dive into the "beautiful and blue" ocean and swim with him.
  • The song was written by Sarah Buxton (Keith Urban's "Put You In a Song"), Tofer Brown (Jon Pardi's "Night Shift") and Abe Stoklasa (Chris Lane's "Fix").
  • Some people have interpreted "Ocean" is about being about someone struggling with substance abuse or depression, but Scott says she's addressing an impenetrable person. She explained to Apple Music she is singing of, "seeing the beauty in someone else that they might not be able to see in themselves in that current season in this relationship, and begging for them to open up."
  • This earned a Grammy nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2021, but Dan + Shay took the trophy for "10,000 Hours."

  • 67kid from SpanawayIt a heartfelt song that makes me think of my brother who is not available to me anymore. It makes me cry every time I listen to it. I’m very proud of the work they did to make this song.
