Songfacts®:

  • Thematically, the Chromatica album is about the curative power of dancing to music during hard times. The record is split into three segments, each beginning with a string instrumental: Chromatica I, Chromatica II, and Chromatica III. Lady Gaga told Apple Music that Chromatica I symbolizes the beginning of her journey to healing.

"It goes right into this grave string arrangement, where you feel this pending doom that is what happens if I face all the things that scare me," she explained. "That string arrangement is setting the stage for a more cinematic experience with this world that is how I make sense of things."
  • The title is a variation of the word "chromatic," a musical term referring to a scale where every note is played. Gaga described "Chromatica" as a location in her mind where all sounds and colors mix.
  • The track plays at the beginning of Gaga's "Stupid Love" video and the planet in the clip is named Chromatica.
  • Chromatica topped the US albums chart. Other #1 long players with made-up titles include U2's Zooropa, Pearl Jam's Vitalogy, Tool's Lateralus, Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto, Future's EVOL and Lil Uzi Vert's Eternal Atake.
  • Gaga wrote all three "Chromatica" parts with Morgan Kibby, who is also known by the stage name White Sea. The Los Angeles singer-songwriter was a member of the French electronic band M83 between 2001 and 2011 and has since contributed to several Panic at the Disco tracks, including their 2015 single "Hallelujah."
