Songfacts®:

  • Lady Gaga was a freshman at New York University when she started writing "LoveGame," the one that goes:

Let's have some fun, this beat is sick
I wanna take a ride on your disco stick

She was studying in the school library when a guy she describes as "the most gorgeous man she's ever seen" caught her eye. "I started writing and writing, and before I knew it, the security guard was telling me I either had to leave or move down to the basement," she said on Ryan Seacrest's radio show.

The second line was originally "I wanna take a ride on your stick," but she made it a "disco stick," inspired by the golden bars that reflect light in the library, evoking a disco ball.

This would have been about 2004, when Gaga was 18. She left school the next year to focus on music. She added that the library was a notorious hookup spot, with the action taking place in the bathrooms, but she didn't get this particular guy.
  • In "LoveGame," Lady Gaga asks a question that's long intrigued her: Do you want love or do you want fame?

The song is part of her first album, appropriately titled The Fame, because that's the theme. She wasn't famous yet but she acted like she was, dressing like a certified pop star and carrying herself with a mein of importance, often flanked by her dancers.
  • That sick beat is the work of Moroccan/Swedish producer RedOne (born Nadir Khayat) who helmed and co-wrote this track. He also produced Lady Gaga's first two hits, "Just Dance" and "Poker Face."
  • Gaga started performing the song in 2008 before it was released. She spent a lot of time in New York City performing in clubs, sometimes even offering to dance in cages if the DJs would play her songs.

"Just Dance" was her first single, and it was a huge hit, going to #1 in many countries, including America, where it claimed the top spot in January 2009. "Poker Face" went to #1 in April, and "LoveGame" reached its chart peak of #5 that June. "Paparazzi," also from The Fame, went to #6 in October.
  • In the music video, Lady Gaga is in a torrid love triangle between love and fame, represented by dancers, one with "love" shaved into his head and another with "fame." It was directed by Joseph Kahn, who also did Britney Spears' "Toxic."

Lady Gaga told MTV the video "is a genuine New York lifestyle video." She added: "It's got that feeling of 'gay, black New York,' of inclusion and glamour. I wanted to really bring forth the girl that I was four years ago, and I wanted to put it in the setting of the underground subway."

She added that Joseph Kahn "didn't just capture the fashion; he captured the artist."
  • When "LoveGame" went to #1 on the Mainstream Top 40 airplay chart, Lady Gaga became only the third artist and first American in the history of that tally to collect three #1 songs from a debut album. "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" were the two The Fame cuts that preceded this one to the top. The two other acts to achieve this feat were Swedish pop group Ace Of Base, who reigned consecutively in 1993-94 on Mainstream Top 40 with three tracks from their debut LP The Sign, and Canadian artist Avril Lavigne, who repeated the feat in 2002-03 with a trio of tracks from her debut release Let Go.
  • Gaga had another artist in mind to record the song, but she hasn't said who. When she got her record deal she was also writing songs for other artists; her songs were recorded by Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls and New Kids On The Block, but weren't released as singles.
