Songfacts®:

  • Lady Gaga enlisted K-pop girl group BlackPink for this bilingual dance track. Jennie of Blackpink starts off the song by rapping:

    I'm sour candy
So sweet then I get a little angry

The girls continue the sweet-but-spicy theme in both English and Korean. Lady Gaga herself is "hard on the outside," but given time promises some enticing love.
  • Gaga was already of fan of Blackpink when she invited them to collaborate with her on a song. The American pop star told Japanese outlet TV Groove she "wanted to celebrate them because they love powerful women like us, and they also wanted to celebrate me." Gaga added that she's proud to be the group's unofficial fifth member for "Sour Candy."
  • Gaga wrote the dance pop confection with:

"Rain On Me" collaborators Rami Yacoub, Burns and BloodPop.

Singer-songwriter Madison Love who has also co-penned hits for Machine Gun Kelly and Camilla Cabello ("Bad Things") and G-Eazy and Halsey ("Him & I").

YG Entertainment's in-house producer Teddy Park, who has been behind many of K-pop's biggest hits.
  • The song debuted at #33 on the Hot 100, marking the first time a K-pop female group has entered the Top 40. BlackPink had previously fallen just short with "Kill This Love," which peaked at #41.
  • Lady Gaga performed "Sour Candy" live for the first time (without BlackPink) at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany on July 17, 2022. The concert was the opening night of The Chromatica Ball. Gaga initially scheduled to begin the tour in 2020, but had to postpone it because of the pandemic.
