Songfacts®:

  • This love song depicts Lana Del Rey and her Italian sweetheart, Salvatore. She also sings the chorus partially in Italian. Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens about the track, Del Rey explained: "[It's] probably the track that's the most different from the other tracks on the record. It has a little bit of an old-world Italian feel. It's kind of a weirder song but I love the chorus. It's filmic."
  • Del Rey previously sung of her bad boy Italian lover on her unreleased track "Backfire," which she recorded in 2010. The song starts:

Salvatore, you can def be my baby blue
Be my mafiosi rock 'n' roll high
Back to Malibu in our trailer park for two
We're like Sid and Nancy loving the fight.
  • Lana Del Rey performed the song for the first time ever at the Montreux Jazz Festival. During her July 13, 2016 set, the songstress opened the show up to requests and seemed surprised by a fan shouting out for "Salvatore."

"Really? That one? We've never even done that one," Del Rey replied, before performing a shortened, a cappella version of the song.
