Songfacts®:

  • "Congrats" is a sarcastic putdown of a lying, immature ex. Lead singer Paul Klein commends his former lover for breaking his heart and pats her on the back for making him suffer. He drops the pretenses on the pre-chorus when he wonders how she sleeps at night knowing she stooped so low. Klein later suggests karma will catch up with her.

Rihanna's 2008 hit "Take A Bow" has a similar theme of sarcastically congratulating a lover for their deceiving ways.
  • Klein co-wrote "Congrats" with the songwriting power couple Sasha Alex Sloan and King Henry. The pair co-wrote most of the tracks on Lany's 2020 hit album Mama's Boy, including the singles "Good Guys," "If This Is The Last Time," and "You!," but didn't contribute to their less successful 2021 set Gg bb xx. Guess Lany hoped Sloan and Henry would recreate the Mama's Boy magic for their first post-gg bb xx single.
  • Paul Klein and drummer Jake Goss co-produced "Congrats" with British producer Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys and Wolf Alice). They introduce a harder rock sound after the electro pop of gg bb xx.
  • LANY initially teased "Congrats" on June 21, 2022, when Klein posted a clip of a rough cut to his Instagram. The band debuted the song during LANY's Summer Forever Tour in early August 2022. They released it as a single on August 24, 2022.
  • "Congrats" is the first new music released by Lany after the departure of their keyboardist Les Priest.
