Songfacts®:

  • "Silver Lining" is a love song where Laufey explores the freedom and boldness that love can inspire. She sings about falling for someone who gives her the freedom to be her wickedest self.
  • When we're punished
    For being so cruel
The silver lining's I'll be there with you

The "Silver Lining" title reflects the central metaphor of the song, which is about finding a glimmer of comfort or hope even in challenging or destructive circumstances. Laufey uses it to express the idea that love, even the messy, reckless, slightly disastrous kind, is still worthwhile if it means having someone next to you when the roof caves in.

As Laufey explained, "'Silver Lining' is a love song about being able to set your true personality free when you fall in love. Your inner child comes out and you are emboldened by lust. Even if it takes you to hell, at least you're with your partner."
  • Laufey wrote the track with Spencer Stewart, a fellow Berklee College of Music graduate and her frequent partner-in-melodic-crime on her breakout album, Bewitched. They conjured a lush jazz-infused sound and an effervescent chorus that reflects the initial rush of attraction.
  • The music video, directed by Jason Lester, takes the song's theme and spins it into a surreal masquerade ball. Filmed in vibrant 35mm, it's filled with rite-of-spring-inspired choreography, masks, and dreamlike chaos. As the party spirals into madness, Laufey and her partner find solace together amid the turmoil.

Jason Lester also shot Laufey's previous videos for "From The Start" and "Santa Baby."
  • The first spark of "Silver Lining" was just two words in Laufey's Notes app.

She started writing the song with only the phrase "silver lining" in mind, then spun it into a vintage-sounding love song that bridges her Bewitched era and a new sonic chapter. She wrote it alone during a day at Electric Lady Studios in New York, inspired by an old guitar left behind with a warm, soulful amp setting.
