"When I'm writing I always think about what's going on in the world," she said. "How are people feeling? What are they going to relate to? I want to listen to a song and know what it's about, that's why I write with details about my life but always think, how will my fans relate? I want it to feel universal."

• While "Fingers Crossed" is angry, "Flowers" is sad and reflective. "You listen to it and you're like, 'You know what? I'm not sorry... screw that person!'" Spencer-Smith said to WRMF of "Fingers Crossed." Regarding "Flowers," she said: "The lyrics are genuinely making you realize, 'Oh. Somebody should buy me flowers. Oh. I should have been more conscious how somebody spoke to me.'"
• Spencer-Smith wrote the piano ballad with Cian Ducrot, who also produced the track. Cork, Ireland-raised, London/LA-based musician Ducrot was signed to the US-based label Darkroom Records, the home of Billie Eilish.
  
  About 10 days after they finished "Flowers," Ducrot completed his breakthrough solo song, "All For You." Both singles entered the UK charts the same week.
• The lyric came together when Ducrot suggested the idea that bad girls only get flowers as an apology, and Spencer-Smith added her own experiences she was going through at the time. "We wrote and recorded the song mucking about for hours," Ducrot recalled to Official Charts. "It was such a fun session, we were just making funny videos and making each other laugh and then we come up with Flowers! We played it for my publishers, I think, and they were blown away."
