  • Lauv knows a relationship is over, but deep down the thought of letting his love interest go, totally scares him.

I'm chasing fire when I'm running after you, you
You got that something that I never wanna lose, lose, yeah
It's like dancing when the song's already over
Moving without getting any closer, oh
I'm chasing fire when I'm running after you

Lauv called it a "song of desperation," but not a sad one. He explained to Billboard: "There's a sense of urgency. I wanted it to feel like desperate and driving and running as opposed to it just being sad."
  • Lauv wrote the song with Frenship, a Los Angeles pop duo comprising James Sunderland and Brett Hite. He recalled: "I wrote it with them actually before I moved to LA. I was doing a writing trip. And always felt the song was special but didn't quite know what do with it. It was just in a very rough demo form."

Lauv kept coming back to the tune before finally figuring out how to produce it a couple of years later.
  • Lauv told Genius the lyrics "It's like dancing when the song's already over. Moving without getting any closer," are his favorite lines from the song. He explained: "To me they sum up what the song is truly about better than any other line in the song."
