Songfacts®:

  • This is the first single from New York dance punk act LCD Soundsystem's third studio album, This is Happening. LCD leader James Murphy explained to Pitchfork that the song "is about drunk people and fun things and the fact that all of the boys of the L.A. mansion we recorded at were called 'the girls' by our chef. We were the ladies of the mansion."
  • The Spike Jonze directed video sees the group being subjected to various degrees of abuse by a group of panda-suit wearing hooligans.
  • Murphy told Billboard magazine about his intentions for the tune. "I just wanted something dumb," he said. "I like dumb, short stuff."
  • Murphy expanded on the song to The NME May 18, 2010: "When we were in Los Angeles we had this amazing chef. This girl was a fan of the label and a DJ. She called us her 'girls.' So it's a song about funny genders and people who are drunk trying to relate, which I always find hilarious. Nothing is more fun to me than two drunk people trying to negotiate."
  • This Is Happening was named the top album of 2010 by the Rhapsody music service. "LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy is a consummate student of pop music, and the perfectly executed This Is Happening synthesizes '70s art rock, early '80s avant disco and '90s post-punk without sounding like self-conscious post-modern pastiche, which is no small achievement," observed Rhapsody CEO Sam Chennault.
