Although he was not really a political animal, when he moved to New York, Leadbelly rubbed shoulders with Woody Guthrie and at one point the then unknown Guthrie was living with the legendary 12-string guitarist and his wife.

    It is probably fair to say that this song was inspired by or perhaps even suggested by if not Guthrie then a fellow traveler. >>>
