Songfacts®:

  • George Benson wasn't the only smooth jazz guitarist to release a pop hit in 1981. Lee Ritenour captured the mellow, romantic mood with "Is It You," co-written by Bill Champlin, who also worked on Benson's "Turn Your Love Around." The song finds the singer ready for love, asking the mysterious lady if she's the one he's looking for.
  • Eric Tagg did the vocal on this track and co-wrote the song with Champlin and Ritenour. In a Songfacts interview with Champlin, he explained: "He brought Eric Tagg into it and they came up with the verses. I wrote the bridge and then at the end of the bridge I went, 'Is it you?' and that ended up becoming the title.

It was a pretty good song, with Eric singing - Eric Tagg can sing time, news and weather and make it really great. He's a great singer, one of the best."
